With a processing similar to the one traditionally used for cotton candy, the cocoon technique arrived to Italy during the mid-twentieth century thanks to Albert Eisenkeil, entrusting the history of national design with an ethereal contemporary appeal. Echoing the candid image of a cloud, the origins of this tale can be found in the history of a small Merano-based company, Cocoon International, which started importing a liquid polymer coating called “cocoon” from the United States, to create the embracing frames of new groundbreaking lamps. A few years later, Achille, Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and Tobia Scarpa were invited to experiment with the new technique. After this propitious collaboration, one of the most renowned lighting companies came to light in 1962, Flos, starting the production of cocoon lamps, destined to become refined icons of Italian design.
