The innate ability of the Eames Plastic Chairs to innovate in response to evolving needs and production standards is ingrained in their DNA. Originally created in 1950 for the Museum of Modern Art's "Low-Cost Furniture Design" competition, they were the first first mass-produced plastic chairs in the history of furniture. "Getting the most of the best to the greatest number of people for the least": with the Eames Plastic chairs, Charles and Ray Eames moved closer to one of their primary objectives in furniture design.
Over the years, Vitra has continually introduced more sustainable materials for the shells of the Eames Shell Chairs. The latest version of the Eames Plastic Chair RE, unveiled in 2024, is made from recycled plastic sourced from household waste. Using this material, which replaces petroleum-based plastics, not only reduces climate-damaging emissions and primary energy consumption significantly but also ensures 100% recyclability.
With the release of the Eames Plastic Chairs RE, Vitra unveils three new colors: cotton white, citron, and emerald. The recycled material composition naturally lends the shells a unique appearance, with speckles of pigment that add depth to the colors.
With their plastic chairs, the Eames pioneered the concept of the multifunctional chair. Their innovative design allows the shell to be paired with different bases, offering versatility for various uses and allowing users to sit comfortably in different postures.
