A timeless seat that is the representation of the design process carried out by the Danish designer Arne Jacobsen, between De Stijl, Bauhaus and nordic rigour. The Egg™ Chair from Fritz Hansen is an armchair with the characteristic shape of an egg, globally recognised as a Scandinavian design icon.
Resulting from complex manufacturing, the Egg armchair is comfortable and welcoming, designed to offer moments of relaxation.
The Egg™ Chair is considered as one of Arne Jacobsen’s masterpieces. The seat is recognisable at first glance: a reinterpretation of the traditional armchair with headrest that continues travelling through time, between past and future, and never grows old.
The armchair was designed in 1958 for the lobby of the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The hotel has been Jacobsen’s major design assignment so far. He has designed all that is inside, from the facade to furniture, lighting and cutlery. The curved shape of the Egg™ armchair was rather unusual at the time and it was created for an equally unusual reason: Jacobsen wanted the interior of the hotel to be in contrast with the modernist architecture of the exterior.
It takes its name from the similarity with a polished eggshell. The Danish designer blends all the functionally distinct parts (seat, backrest and armrests), into a unique form: the result is a protective envelope, curved and inviting like the inside of an eggshell.
Every single Egg™ Chair is hand-sewn with a characteristic wave method within the Fritz Hansen brand’s factory. A process that requires time, care and attention, all elements that contribute to giving the chair its original look and the palpable feeling of higher quality.
Despite the great production of architectural works, including the design of houses, banks, schools and theatres, Arne Jacobsen is best known as a designer. His manufacturing of chairs, made in collaboration with Fritz Hansen is famous, and alternates between formal research and technical experimentation. His legacy as a pioneer modernist and uncompromising designer, reflects his complex nature.
