Son of the famous architect Carlo Scarpa, Tobia Scarpa carries on the search and the design of durable and versatile products, able to combine style and function. Furnishings with essential yet bold lines, that draw inspiration from the craft tradition and are often reissued by top brands with new materials and finishes to suit a contemporary lifestyle. A worldly-renowned architect and designer, Tobia Scarpa embraces a modern and completely out-of-the box aesthetic that has awarded him prestigious prizes, such as the Compasso d'Oro and the International Forum Design. Among his most famous and iconic creations are: the Fantasma lamp by Flos, the MHC.3 Miss chair by Molteni&C. and Pigreco by Tacchini, a seat resulting from the balance between straight and curved lines.
A single block of white Carrara marble is transformed into an elegant and sophisticated table lamp, realised by Tobia Scarpa for Flos. Biagio, which entered the design scene in 1968, is characterised by modern shapes and minimal lines. The marble veins, different from each other, make each piece unique. When turned on, the direct light beam, now available in the LED version, allows it to be used as a reading lamp. When off, the lamp looks like a sculpture, precious and captivating. Biagio is, therefore, the perfect solution to decorate any environment and can be placed also in the corners of the living room or the home studio.
Like an essential mark, the Pigreco chair elegantly enhances the alternance between mass and void and the balance between straight and curved lines. Among the iconic pieces by Tobia Scarpa, the Pigreco Chair was created in 1959 at the end of the designer’s studies in architecture. The basic idea was to convey dynamism and “sense of space” to a usually static and functional furnishing: two back legs close to each other, joined by a horizontal element ensuring a great structural stability while seated and characterised by a triangular shape, an unusual concept, able to convey a feeling of lightness and airiness. The result is striking and breaks with all conventional boundaries yet seen. Winner of the German Design Award 2022, Pigreco is still a modern and contemporary piece, proposed by Tacchini with a broader choice of finishes and materials. The padded cushion is available in the fabric or leather covering.
Winner of the Wallpaper* Design Awards Best Reissue 2017, the MHC.3 Miss chair, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1986, is the emblem of the simple and elegant style of the designer. A soft and continuous mark, starting from the slender legs and flowing into the armrests and the backrest, which is curved in order to maximise comfort. Moreover, the seat seems to join all lines together in an embrace. Reissued by Molteni&C, MHC.3 Miss has a frame in natural or black stained ash and a seat upholstered in leather or in braided rope.
Characterised by a soft light and a minimal style, the Fantasma floor lamp by Flos has a semi-transparent effect that has inspired the name of the piece. The body in powder-coated steel is wrapped in an upholstery made of Cocoon resin, that ensures a longer lifespan and adds a surprising original touch. Perfect to decorate a corner of the living room or to brighten the spaces of the night area, Fantasma is dimmable, which means that light intensity is directly adjustable via the cable. Designed by Tobia Scarpa for Flos in 1961, it is available in two sizes: in the large version with a 195 cm height and in the small version with a 183 cm height.
