A cherished design by Hans J. Wegner, the Ox Chair held a special place in his home, where he personally chose it to furnish his living room. Among his most distinctive creations, it stands as an icon of elegance, avant-garde design, and expert craftsmanship—a timeless masterpiece in the world of furniture.
When the Ox Chair debuted in 1960, its bold, sculptural presence marked a departure from the restrained aesthetic typical of Scandinavian design. With this piece, Wegner challenged conventional notions of both aesthetics and functionality in furniture design.
Inspired by the horns of an ox, the chair’s voluminous upper structure is balanced by an elegant steel base. This striking contrast between the imposing form and slender legs posed a significant production challenge from the very first models crafted by the Danish company AP Workshop.
In the 1980s, Wegner entrusted the chair’s production to designer and manufacturer Erik Jørgensen, who refined the upholstery with an innovative technique using foam blocks. This groundbreaking approach not only enhanced the chair’s structural integrity but also ensured greater durability compared to traditional upholstery methods of the time.
In 2020, Fredericia acquired Erik Jørgensen, carrying forward the legacy of expert craftsmanship that maintains the Ox Chair’s exceptional quality to this day.
With its sculptural lines, meticulous craftsmanship, and pioneering upholstery techniques, the Ox Chair remains one of Wegner’s most extraordinary works. More than just a design statement, it offers an ergonomic seating experience shaped by a deep understanding of human posture—uniting bold aesthetics with enduring comfort.
